About the Artist
This artist of Hawaii brings a mythical and ethereal watercolor painting style to the island of Kauai.
Growing up in the mountains of rural Pennsylvania, Ric Madden learned to appreciate nature and the beauty of landscapes at an early age. He started drawing at the age of six.
His high school only offered one art class, so he took the same class over and over for three years. The last year he was able to do independent study. “I never had to decide what I was going to be when I grew up,” Ric says “ I always knew I was going to be an artist”. After high school, Ric landed a job at a commercial art studio in Philadelphia, and learned how to prepare art for printing. This was the beginning of a twenty year career as a graphic designer and illustrator. During this time he continued to paint and travel, eventually ending up in California where he opened a design studio and later expanded the business to include advertising and publishing.
Eventually settling in Hawaii, on the island of Kaua’i, Ric now spends most of his time on Hawaiian art paintings. Drawing his inspiration from the lush tropical landscapes of the Hawaiian islands. His watercolor paintings possess an inspirational, almost dreamlike quality. His subjects include landscape paintings, watercolor animals and watercolor portraits.

“This island, with its lush beauty and gentle people is a constant source of inspiration to me. It is truly a magical place. To be able to share this with others, through my paintings, gives me great satisfaction and fulfillment in my life. It is my hope that people, when viewing my work, will recognize in it some part of themselves that reflect our perfect idea of paradise and the spirit of aloha.”
